The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is looking for a talented graduate for a Postmaster position with its sustainable Productivity Enhancement program. The Postmaster program is initiated to provide work experience in an international research environment to talented students, which gives them comparative advantage at recruitment procedures for PhD or regular job positions. The position will be stationed at AfricaRice in Cotonou, Benin.

Responsibilities:

The Postmaster and will work under the supervision of the Remote Sensing and GIS specialist in the GCP-RCI and the STRASA-II projects. The Postmaster will work on the assessment of drought occurrence in the rice production systems, in current conditions and under future climate. Spatial information is essential information for defining Target Population environments (TPEs) for rice breeders. The Postmaster will be responsible for:

  1. Assesing drought in various rice ecosystems in Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria using climatic data and spatial hydrological modeling
  2. Collecting data sets on climate, soils, land use, rice systems, amongst others and conduct quality assessment;
  3. Contribute to the definition of Target Population Environments for drought tolerant rice varieties; and
  4. Exploring the possibilities for spatial analysis of yields and water productivity by linking Aquacrop to GIS software such as ArcGIS.

Requirements:

The successful candidates should have:

  1. An MSc in Geography, Ecology or Agriculture with a specialization in hydrological modelling
  2. Experience in the use of GIS software likeArcGIS;
  3. Pro-active and original way of thinking, and
  4. Communication skill in either English or French.

Desirable Requirements: Experience with rice production systems in Africa;

  1. Programming skills; and
  2. General computer skills, including MS Excel, ftp-software, etc.

Terms and Conditions:

The contract for the position will be for a fixed two-year term.
