As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors.

GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit Junior Advisor for timber processing forthe programme of Biodiversity and forestry.

A.  Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility for the:

· Report on all kind of processing of timber in Ethiopia;

·Support the project partners in their tasks;

·Follow up on the mission of timber processing

· Synergy between the different activities of the programme with focus on commercial forestry;

· Technical monitoring of the programm’s field activities;

In this framework, the employee has the following duties:

Report on all kind of processing of timber in Ethiopia

·To integrate in the forestry department of BFP

·To be all the time knowledgeable of timber processing and create a network of:

o   Good processing companies

o   Knowledgeable people in timber processing

o   All services around (design etc.)

·To assess all kind of gaps processing units have, with the objective to improve the processing and the products

·To find out about possible national PPP to support and trigger investment in timber processing

·To make sure, that the BFP indicator about timber processing and timber product improvement will be fulfilled

Support the partners in their tasks

·To be close to possible partners in timber processing

·To advise state forest enterprises in timber processing, mainly saw milling and devise mechanisms to increase their efficiencies

·To support the bigger factories in their endeavour to improve processing and create working places, jobs and income:

o   Quality improvement

o   Better market chances

o   Higher yield and better income

o   Job creation

·To identifiy potencial areas where trainees can make a input in the improvement of the system and support the possible employment of trainees in those processing places

Follow up on the mission of timber processing

·To cooperate with selected sawmills and work on defined processes

·To cooperate with selected companies in order to improve their working processes

·To follow up on requests of timber processing companies and enterprises to support them in finding solutions for their problems

·To ensure at any time the link between timber processing, forestry and the BFP in general;

Synergy between the different activities of the programme with focus on commercial forestry

·To cooperate actively with the group for value chains in the programme

·To cooperate actively with the commercial forestry projects in the programme

·To take part in all kind of marketing discussions on the forestry side and bring in the aspects of processing of timber

·To be in touch with designers and other service providers for timber processing

·To make sure, that there is a link between other GIZ projects in timber processing (joiner provessional school) and BFP

Technical monitoring of the projects field activities related to conservation

·To coordinate all kind of activities between HQ, programme, and projects in the field of timber processing and associated domains

·To be involved in all missions to the field and communicate with the beneficiaries of people travelling in the field of timber processing;

·To support the close monitoring of the activities in relation to the indicators of the assigned projects;

·To make sure, that the programme is at all times informed about the progress towards the programme indicator;

·To make sure, that BFP knows at all times, what the timber processing creates in jobs and income.

C.  Other responsibilities

·Support the administration of the program and ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected.

·Take an active part in all the meetings, workshops etc. of the programme, mainly related to the projects assigned.

·Be actively involved in the undertakings of the programme team and ensure that the common decisions are materialized in due time

·Be actively involved in transversal tasks (gender, HIV AIDS, etc.)

·Assume all other assigned tasks of the superior

Job Requirements

D.  Qualifications required

·Degree in timber processing or similar closely related subject;

·Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in the timber processing related sector

·Have proven communication skills;

·Good mastering of the English language and at least two Ethiopian languages
