In the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) fisheries are
vitally important for the livelihoods of the population. Many coastal
communities depend on income and food from fisheries. In the whole
Caribbean Region production has declined by 40 percent over the
last two decades.

This programme for sustainable growth of the fisheries and aquaculture in the Caribbean SIDS could also be seen as part of the FAO Blue Growth Initiative, which aims to be a leading global programme supporting the sustainable harvesting and utilization of aquatic resources for food security and economic growth.
