The Acumen Fund seeks to harness the power of social innovation to create solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. The Fund administers regional programs for each of East Africa, India, and Pakistan. In each region, 20 fellows are selected for a leadership development program of five one-week seminars while remaining in their jobs. Acumen covers all program expenses related to travel and accommodations, but it does not offer scholarships, stipends, or other funding. Past fellows have included several in smallholder agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, fair trade, and other subject areas.

SEMINAR 1: FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP

The first seminar explores the meaning of a just society and the moral and historical foundation of social change through a series of curated readings of great thinkers such as Plato, Gandhi, Amartya Sen and Nelson Mandela.

SEMINAR 2: ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP

The second seminar delves into the nature of leadership and what it takes to mobilize people and resources in a constantly changing world.

SEMINAR 3: SYSTEMS THINKING

The third seminar explores the concept of Systems Thinking and provides Fellows with frameworks to better understand larger, systemic problems and design more effective interventions.

SEMINAR 4: CAPSTONE PROJECT

The Capstone Project provides fellows with the opportunity to apply their learning while working collaboratively on a live adaptive challenge proposed by members of Acumen’s global community.

SEMINAR 5: LEADING INTO THE FUTURE

The final seminar focuses on synthesizing the lessons from the year, pushing the Fellows to examine their personal growth and transformation through the leadership journey and practice collaborative leadership as they leave to tackle society’s most complex problems.
